The CoCoon project is coming to an end, so we wanted to share a bit about the project and the work that FLR did as part of it.

Core Objectives

The project aims to accelerate the green transition by integrating bio-design into higher education and Vocational Education and Training (VET). Key goals include:

  • Curriculum Development: Creating innovative bio-design modules that blend biology, design, and technology to solve sustainability challenges.

  • Knowledge Transfer: Facilitating the co-creation of educational materials between research institutions and the industry to ensure skills align with market needs.

  • Systemic Transition: Supporting the shift toward circular and sustainable bioeconomy models through a transdisciplinary approach.

Core Deliverables at FLR

  • The biodesign modules are made to help makers and students get started with bio design. Fab Lab Reykjavik made three modules, and Unruly Matters made two. See all the modules at https://www.cocoon.bio/modules.

  • The virtual exhibit was made to give bio-designers a chance to share their work as well as spark a community as part of the project. People from 14 different countries submitted work to this exhibit. This is a view of the work that is being done in biodesign. To see the virtual exhibit, go to https://www.cocoon.bio/virtual-exhibit.

  • We, as a lab, also have more experience working with bio-based design and would happily share our facilities with someone interested in bio-design.

Below are images from the bio modules that we worked on, including mycelium leather, yeastograms, and bioluminescence.

If you have any bio-related questions relating to the lab, contact anna@flr.is or flr@flr.is. For general project information, check out https://www.cocoon.bio/.

A special thanks to the CoCoon team for allowing us to work on this project. We have all learn so much from each other.
